About the current and new standards (in development)
Title 24, Part 6, of the California Code of Regulations are Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings that were established in 1978 in response to a legislative mandate to reduce California's energy consumption. The standards are updated periodically to allow consideration and possible incorporation of new energy efficiency technologies and methods.
Primary means for reducing energy use is to limit allowable lighting power in a building. California is currently using 2005 standards, but 2008 is in draft form. Lighting is in sections 5-6.
Title 24 requirements and Boca Flasher’s Involvement
While there are many technical unknowns today, the results of the past few years suggest that there are no fundamental reasons why these (LED) light sources can’t achieve efficiencies 10-12X that of incandescent lamps, and 2X that of fluorescent lamps.
Building Types: The Code applies to:
[130-149] Nonresidential, high-residential, motel/hotel and outdoor lighting
[150] High-rise residential and hotel/motel guest rooms, with exception
[150] Low-rise residential
[100] 2005 Title 24 also applies to unconditioned buildings and outdoor lighting systems, including indoor and outdoor signs.
Exceptions include some temporary and qualified historic buildings.
Significant 2005 Title 24 requirements include:
• No unconditioned space exemption
• Control certifications
• New skylight and daylighting requirements
• Further reductions in lighting power
• Clarifications and requirements for retail spaces
• Outdoor lighting zones, energy calculations and controls
• Clarifications and requirements for sign control
• Residential mandates
Boca products conform (or most often exceed) the lighting power values for applicable categories, specific task areas and performance. Boca is committed to compliance with industry and relevant standards as well as to best practices. (Consult with Boca on specific project).
