LED lighting compared to fluorescent
While fluorescent lighting has proven inexpensive and particularly popular for general purpose, commercial down lighting, there is a wide range of disadvantages associated with it. In addition, as tougher lighting standards and requirements are demanded, LED lighting is gaining in use based on energy efficiency and a variety of inherent performance benefits.

LED lighting (bulbs, MR16 lamps and linear systems) compared to fluorescents:

Immediate startup and flicker-free operation
LEDs have no startup delays, meaning they glow immediately, without flicker, even in cold climates and harsh environments. They turn on instantly even at extreme temperatures. They are ideal for applications subject to frequent on-off cycling.

Concentration of light and design versatility
LED lighting can be diffused (bulbs by frosted glass shells), yet lamps and linear lighting systems offer a greater concentration of light (fluorescents need reflector panels or other means to direct light). This directional output allows LED systems to be more versatile in design uses and to more effectively operate in environments inappropriate for fluorescents.

No ballast-related problems
LED lighting systems have no ballast to interfere with various transmission signals encountered in commercial, residential and public spaces. Ballast for fluorescents is also not only bulky, but failures raise maintenance costs.

Long lasting without maintenance
Fluorescent, although relatively inexpensive for initial cost, have significant labor/replacement costs over time. LED systems last 50,000 to100,000 hours – ten years of service.

Durability and safety
LED lighting systems are more rugged and damage-resistant than compact fluorescents. Because LEDs have solid-state components, they are difficult to damage with external shock. Fluorescents are easily broken during packaging and transportation or if improperly handled. LED lighting presents no arcing hazards. They are far safer in virtually every physical and operational aspect.

Extremely more environmentally friendly
LED Lighting is considered to be Earth-friendly, or “green” lighting. Over 500 million to 600 million fluorescent tubes are disposed of in the USA every year. Despite industry efforts to limit mercury content and encourage recycling, this represents a significant amount of mercury being added to landfills. And because the products last longer, there are fewer replacements to litter the environment.
